If you feel frustrated because it seems that none of the media-baptized major candidates for president come close to representing your worldview, it may comfort you to know that there are a host of other “fringe” candidates who would be delighted to speak for you. From the far left to the extreme right, there is bound to be a presidential candidate that’s willing to stand up for your political ideals. You may need to do a little research however, since most of these candidates are ignored by the press and cannot afford to buy commercial time.
The U.S. Taxpayers Alliance presents Howard Phillips for those voters who are more concerned with a candidate’s character and principles and who are willing to sacrifice short term political success for the long term possibility of transforming our nation. Howard Phillips preaches one of the most revolutionary messages of any of these third party candidates. His philosophy of government is explicitly Christian. There are a number of politicians who support a generally Christian approach to welfare, business and economics, while misapplying the concept of liberty in order to endorse abortion, euthanasia, sodomy and drug use. Other politicians may oppose these social evils while promoting the economic half of the liberal/humanist agenda. Phillips believes that biblical principles apply to both economic and moral issues.
Howard Phillips has been part of the American political scene for more than 30 years. After twice serving as the Student Council president at Harvard College, he orchestrated a conservative takeover of the Republican Party of Boston, which he chaired for two years. From 1966-68 as the assistant to the chairman of the Republican National Committee, he recruited thousands of young people and minorities to civic activism and public service careers. Phillips headed up two U.S. government agencies including the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity in the Executive Office of the President. In 1974, he resigned from government to become the Chairman of the Conservative Caucus. His political activities culminated in the recent creation of the U.S. Taxpayers Alliance as a precursor to a full fledged alternative national party.
Mr. Phillips claims that the “politics of conventional ambition and political pragmatism are not working.” His strategy for change is simple: “To establish a party of principle which will have the option of withholding political support from either or both major political parties whenever it is determined that the lesser of two evils can be the worst outcome of all. But our objective is more profound than to achieve victory in particular electoral contests. Our goal is to recast the entire dialectic of American politics away from humanistic, socialistic materialism, and back in the direction of biblical, constitutional liberty.”
Howard Phillips raises many critical issues which have been deliberately squelched from public debate for years. He may or may not be the best doctor to offer the strong medicine he prescribes, but he is more willing to share the formula with anyone who recognizes the need. Let’s just hope we can get some vaccine to the patient before the disease spreads too far.
