BRAAMFONTEIN, South Africa (FR) – A glossy, 16-page magazine, The Forerunner: Preparing The New South African, has premiered in South Africa with three issues thus far in 1993. The staff, made up of South Africans and American missionaries, plans to produce a quarterly publication. The magazine has been conceived as an outreach to youth, university students, political leaders and businessmen.
Many of the articles which have appeared in The Forerunner: Preparing The New South African have been reprinted from The Forerunner USA. Other articles have included prophetic and evangelistic articles written with a South African campus audience in mind. Recent articles have included: “The Framework for a Free, Just and Prosperous New South Africa”; “Love, Lust or Romance?”; “Racial Reconciliation”; “Economics: Weighing the Cost”; and “The Massacre of Innocence: Abortion.”
This new ministry was originally envisioned by American missionary Dawson Lewis who first went to South Africa in 1990 as a full-time administrator for Maranatha Church of South Africa. Maranatha Church recently merged with a smaller campus outreach on the University of Johannesburg, His People Christian Ministries, which has established churches in four major cities in South Africa.
His People Christian Ministries has a plan for the political and economic restructuring of South Africa according to biblical principles. The Johannesburg church recently sponsored the Symposium for the Biblical Reconstruction of South Africa. His People includes high school and university campus ministry in their strategy to reach the new generation of South African leadership with the gospel.
Although The Forerunner USA was not integrally involved in the birthing of the South African magazine, managing editor, Nicky Becker, has made an appeal for equipping and training in the future. She wrote in a recent fax: “We would very much like to link up with you. In the first place, it is difficult to find international information as South Africa is still very isolated. We also have a great need for training from someone as experienced as yourself.”
The Forerunner: Preparing The New South African will be an effective tool to plant the seed of biblical reformation in the hearts and minds of the next generation of South African leadership.
