OCALA — An Orlando abortion doctor on trial for attempted extortion and conspiracy testified Thursday that he was misled by his real estate consultant and lawyer into signing an affidavit containing false statements. Dr. James Scott Pendergraft said his adviser, Michael Spielvogel, led him to believe that opening his abortion clinic in Ocala would create “an environment of terrorism” because of strong protests from anti-abortion forces in Marion County. Prosecutors charge that, at various times, Spielvogel and Pendergraft offered not to open an abortion clinic in Ocala and to settle a lawsuit against the county, both in exchange for money.
